This is a steep but non-technical walk most of the way. A short section of easy scrambling is required to reach the top.
Botmaskop (914 m) is the closest and easiest high point to reach from Stellenbosch. The route follows forestry roads on the west of Helshoogte pass, and then a steep rocky trail through fynbos. The final stretch requires scrambling up a short rocky gully and through a boulder field to the summit beacon.
The sunrises and sunsets from Botmaskop are unforgettable!
The quickest and shortest way back is down the same route, but the walk along the ridge and down via the Jonkershoek saddle is well worth the extra effort.
