The climb up Botmaskop is steep but easy most of the way. A short section of easy scrambling is required to reach the top. The ridgeline traverse and descent through Jonkerhoek is longer but less steep. This route makes a great technical trail run!
Botmaskop (914 m) is the closest and easiest high point to reach from Stellenbosch. The route up follows forestry roads on the south of Helshoogte pass, and then a steep trail through the fynbos to the top. The final stretch requires scrambling up a short rocky gully and through a boulder field to the summit beacon.
The section along the ridgeline from the Botmaskop summit to the “saaltjie” or saddle in Jonkershoek is the highlight of this route. We’re bound to encounter dassies & lizards sunning themselves on the rocks, beautiful fynbos flowers, stunning views both sides of the ridge, and in all likelihood no other people.
From the saddle we follow the forestry roads and/or mountain bike trails down to the Jonkershoek reserve gate where we will be collected. This route makes a great technical trail run (we can include the scenic road section back into town to add a few easy kilometers and make a circular route).
