Haelkop (1384 m) is the big triangular peak to the south of Stellenbosch which dominates the skyline as you approach the town from the N2. It can be ascended from the NW ridge, or (for a slightly tougher challenge) from the SE via Sosysnek.
Haelkop is seldom climbed; the trails are faint and often over-grown. This is an outing for adventurous mountain walkers who don’t mind a long slog and a few fynbos scratches. For such people it presents a wonderful challenge and escape!
